RATIONALE
Percutaneous transhepatic treatment of biliary stones in patients for whom the endoscopic approach is not feasible or has failed classically include stone extraction through dedicated devices (ie Dormia basket) or sphincteroplasty and stone expulsion into the bowel with balloons. Laser lithotripsy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy are other percutaneous options. Recent technical advances in percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy, combined with electrohydraulic lithotripsy, may increase the efficacy of interventional treatment of biliary stones, especially in selected patients.
